Dear friends!

Contestants from 15 countries and Russian pop-stars, famous songs about the World War II, reputable jury, audience of thousands and sincere emotions – this is what all participants and guests of the “Road to Yalta” festival – 2021 will remember. The best of the best took part in the final gala-concert on the 1st of May, artists from many countries of the world who came to Yalta despite of all quarantine and administrative barriers. They came out to the huge scene on the Lenin’s Embarkment to sing in duets with Russian artists and compete for the main prize.

They used the most international language of all, the language of music, to tell about eternal things, about sad departures and happy rejoining, about friendship and love. The Festival keeps growing, more and more vocalists from all over the world apply to participate. But one thing remains the same, it is the atmosphere of friendship and respect towards our mutual history.

"My name is Nancy Adejor. I was born in the former USSR, in Kazakhstan. I've been singing at various stages since my childhood in Almaty and continued to do so in Toronto, Canada, that has become my new home. Singing has always been a very important part of my life. Growing up I was exposed to the rich culture of Russian movies and songs about the Great Patriotic War and the people of all ages and nationalities struggling, surviving and winning in it. Every year we celebrate the Victory Day on May 9th, giving thanks to everyone who fought for peace and freedom. Though I belong to a completely different generation, this part of history is very meaningful to me, my family and my friends. That's why it's a tremendous honor for me to participate in the festival, and at the same time I'm excited to share my love and joy for singing with people around. My voice is an instrument that allows me to share my thoughts and emotions through music as the most universal language of all. My name is Frederique. I have graduated from OCAD University majoring in bachelor of fine arts. My passions are photography, art, singing and writing music. It is a great honour for me to be a part of this magnificent festival. I used to learn about history and War from my family since I was a child. My great grandfather was a tank man and he died in a tank in Poland, on March 24. My relatives and I hold and pay great respect for him. "No one and nothing is forgotten." It is an honour for me to sing a song "To That Fellow" which my mother and I had to work on and translate together. I am extremely grateful for getting a chance to sing this song with one of the greatest vocalists Nancy Adejor."

Federico Martello

"I am a singer, performer and songwriter with internationally recognized artistic merits. After studying different singing techniques, I did a long apprenticeship around the world (USA, Russia, Gibraltar, Poland, Spain) because I wanted to know and compare with different cultures to grow myself. Music is a great communication tool and we artists have an obligation to convey positive messages. This is why I decided to represent Italy in Yalta on the anniversary of the Great War: remembering a painful past helps to face the future with awareness and the same courage as a fighter for his ideals."

Jānis Lemežis

"Jānis Lemežis is a vocalist, composer, multi-instrumentalist. Jānis Lemežis was born in Saldus, Latvia in 1985. He graduated from the Saldus Music School twice: as an accordionist and a saxophonist. In 2006 he graduated from the Liepāja Music High School as a saxophonist. He started his stage career as a pianist and backing vocalist in a Liepaja rock band with Felix Ķigelis and a music group "Stendera Street Boys". After that he played in a band with Ivo Fomina, where his piano and vocal skills were improved. Also, the song “We Live in Fairy Tales” was co-written, for which Jānis, as one of the authors, received the Copyright Infinity Award. After receiving this award, he realized that he wanted to improve as a vocalist and composer and in 2011 he released a single with Nick Matvējeva. Jānis is a laureate of several international vocal competitions. He sings in six languages: Latvian, Russian, English, Armenian, Kazakh and Lithuanian."

"I was born in a small town in the north of Portugal. In my hometown music studies were reserved to the very privileged ones, which was not my case. After finishing high school, I started to work as a mason in my father’s marble factory. My friends saw my vocal potential and invited me to join several musical projects, which gave me confidence I could be a musician one day. When I was 23, I decided to take singing lessons. Every Friday, for three years, I drove 160 km to attend the classes, it was very exhausting but crucial to the singer I am today. I also started to work with a popular band that played at fairs and summer festivals, where I remained as one of the lead singers for several years. In 2017 I moved to Porto and started to work as a street musician. In 2020 I enrolled in a TV Show Contest (The Voice Portugal). I won the third place and the experience opened me several doors in the national context. This Festival is the right challenge for me. Especially because of the historical and political context and the intention to perpetuate the musical heritage. I’ve never heard of anything like that before."

"My name is Linor Gauman and I am a singer. I am very happy to participate in the Road to Yalta Festival, because I have a deep connection to Russian culture and music. My grandparents are Holocaust survivors, and one of my grandfathers fought in the Red Army.
I am a graduate of the Robin Conservatory in Haifa. I sang in the Air Force band in the Israeli army.
As a child, I sang everywhere and in every circle that was close to home... But the beginning was very difficult. I was a very shy girl and had a hard time integrating socially. One day we fought with a child who abused me because of the origin of my parents. The music teacher heard me shouting and called me to come to the office immediately. She told me to not pay attention to abuses, stop yelling and start singing instead. And that’s what I’m still doing!"

Beata Muszler

"My name is Beata Muszler, I am Polish, I live in Warsaw. I graduated from the Warsaw University in Political Sciences. Currently I have a manager’s position at a medical clinic. I combine work with my hobby – music. And I love to do both.
Ever since I was young, I have been singing – in kinder garden, school choirs, music groups. I performed as an amateur for smaller and larger crowds.
I prefer to choose repertoire that touches my soul. I grew up listening to Polish and Russian bard songs of such authors as: Jacek Kaczmarski, Jacek Gintrowski, Vladimir Visotsky and of course Bulat Okudzhava.
I live an active life that includes running, hiking, fitness and dancing."

For that fellow

Music by M.Fradkin. Lyrics by R.Rozhdestvensky
Performed by Lev Leshchenko.
Watch on youtube.com

Today I would wake up before dawn,
I would walk across the broad field.
Something happened to my memory —
I remember what happened to another man.
Raindrops are falling on my hollow cheeks,
For the universe twenty years is a little period.
I wasn’t even familiar with that guy
Who promised his mom that he would come back.

Refrain:
Steppe herbs have bitter aroma,
winds are so young.
If we wake up at midnight
Because of thunder
It seems an echo
Of the past war.
The spring promises to be long,
The field waits for high-grade seeds.
But I live on this kind land
Both my life and that guy’s life instead of him.
It is hard to bear this load
But I cannot live in other way because
His voice still calls for me,
His song still sounds in me.

Refrain.

A song of the frontline driver

Music by B.Mokrousov. Lyrics by N.Lablovskiy and B.Lasrin
Performed by Mark Bernes.
Watch on youtube.com

Through rivers, mountains and valleys
Through the blizzard, fire and black smoke
We were driving cars
Avoiding mines
On the front-line roads.

Chorus:
Eh, front-line path!
Any bombing is not terrible for us,
It’s too early for us to die —
We still have things to do at home.
It’s too early for us to die —
We still have things to do at home.

The way for us to Berlin, by the way,
I was, friends, not easy and not fast.
We walked days and nights
It was very difficult
But the driver did not abandon the wheel.

Chorus.

Maybe to individual civilians
This song is a little unacknowledged.
We won’t forget
Where we will not live
Front driven roads.

Chorus twice.

I’ve been drinking the sap

Music and lyrics by E.Agranovich
Performed by Mikhail Nozhkin.
Watch on youtube.com

I had been drinking birch sap in the forest in spring ,
I had been sleeping with my beloved songbird in hay…
I have lost what I loved, I have not saved what I had
I was brave and lucky but I didn’t know happines.

And I was like an autumn leave flying in the wind of life,
I was changing the cities, I was changing the names.
I have breathed enough dust of the overseas roads,
Where the flowers did not smell and the moon did not shine…

And I was throwing the butts overboard in the ocean,
I was cursing the beauty of islands and seas,
And the malarial fog of Brazilian marshes,
And the wine of pubs, and the anguish of camps.

If only I could cross my life and start again,
Fly to my beloved songbird…
But only will Motherland recognize
One of the gone sons of hers?

Good-bye, boys

Music and lyrics by B.Okudzhava
Performed by author.
Watch on youtube.com

Oh wretched war, what did you do?
Our courtyards became silent,
our kids raised their heads
and grew up far too fast.
They hardly showed at our doorsteps
and were gone, soldier after soldier…

Farewell, boys! And boys,
do what you can to come back.

Don’t hide away, be great,
spare neither bullets nor grenades,
don’t spare even yourselves, but still
do what you can to come back.

Oh what did you do, wretched war?
Disunion and smoke instead of weddings.
Our girls passed their white dresses
on to their younger sisters.
Sure, who doesn’t wear boots nowadays?
And thinner than their shoulder pads!

Don’t pay attention to gossips, girls,
we’ll settle these scores later.
Let them say you’ve got nothing to believe in,
claim you don’t know where you’re headed…

Farewell, girls. And girls,
do what you can to come back.

Song about Lyonka Korolyev

Music and lyrics by B.Okudzhava
Performed by author.
Watch on youtube.com

In the courtyard, where every evening is played radiogram,
Where couples danced, Pyle,
All the guys respected very Lyonka Korolyev,
And awarded him the title of King.

There was a King — as the king, the Almighty, and if other
Will be bad, or not at all lucky,
He extended his Royal hand,
Your loving hand will save.

But one day, when “Messershmitt”, like crows,
Broke the dawn silence,
Our King, like a king — and his cap as the crown —
On one side, and went to war.

Again plays radiogram, again the sun is in the Zenith,
But there is no one to mourn his life.
Because the king was one, sorry,
Queen never managed to acquire.

But wherever I went, and let what nor care,
Affairs, or so — walk,
All I imagine that’s just around the bend
The king will meet again.

Because, in the war though and really shoot
Not for Lyonka raw land,
Potota what is wrong, but I was not present,
Without such, as he of the King.

The three tankmen

Music by Pokrass brothers. Lyrics by B.Laskin
Performed by Schiller Institute Choir, USA.
Watch on youtube.com

Clouds pass gloomily on the border,
The austere land is gripped by silence.
By the high banks of the Amur
The motherland’s sentries stand.

There a substantial guard is positioned for the enemy.
There stands brave and strong
At the border of far eastern land
The armoured attack battalion

There they live — and this song stands as testimony —
Inviolable, like a well-knit family,
Three tank crewmen, three cheerful friends,
The crew of a war machine.

On the grass lay heavy dew,
Widespread fog descended.
On that night an enemy troop decided
To cross the border at the river.

But intelligence reported accurately:
And, the crew raised up,
Over far eastern homeland went
The armoured attack battalion

The tanks raced along, the wind getting up
Formidable armour was advancing
And the enemy troop flew to the ground
Under the pressure of steel and fire.

And they finished off — this song stands as testimony —
All the enemy in a fiery attack.
Three tank crewmen, three cheerful friends,
The crew of a war machine!

We are aviators

Friends, We Are Migratory Birds
Friends, we are migratory birds,
But the only thing is bad in our mode of life:
We hadn’t enough time to get married on the ground,
But in the sky you can never find a wife!

That’s because, that’s because we are pilots,
And the sky, and the sky is our sweet home.
Primarily, primarily are planes for us,
— Well, what about girls? — But girls are later.

You may caress in mind a gentle image,
You want to present your heart forever;
Today you meet, you look, you fall in love,
But tomorrow you’ll get order to fly away.

That’s because, that’s because we are pilots,
And the sky, and the sky is our sweet home.
Primarily, primarily are planes for us,
— Well, what about girls? — But girls are later

So to not meet with longing on the way,
Recalling the tender glance,
We’ve decided not to fall in love, my friends,
Even with the most beautiful girls.

That’s because, that’s because we are pilots,
And the sky, and the sky is our sweet home.
Primarily, primarily are planes for us,
— Well, what about girls? — But girls are later.

In the frontline wood

Music by M.Blanter. Lyrics by M.Isakovsky
Performed by Josef Kobzon.
Watch on youtube.com

From birches silent weightlessly
Falls down yellow leaf.
Old waltz “Autumn Dream”
Bellows an accordionist.
Sighing, basses do protest,
And though in a trance
Sitting and listening are warriors —
My friends.

Beneath this waltz on a spring day
We dancing used to go,
Beneath this waltz in homeland
We loved our girlfriends.
Beneath this waltz we used to catch
The light of beloved eyes,
Beneath this waltz we were sad
When girlfriend’s not with us.

And once again it was played
In the frontline woods,
And everyone in silence listened
About something dear;
And everyone thought of his [girl]
Recalling that far spring,
And everyone knew road to her
Will lead through the war.

Let light and joy of prior dates
Shine while these trying times,
And if it’s time to lay in earth,
Then, well, it is only once.
But even death — in fire, in smoke —
Shall not intimidate,
And what each one’s supposed to do
Let each one to achieve.

And so, friends, since it’s our turn,
Let steel remain hard!
May our heart neither still
Nor tremble our hand;
Our turn has come, our time is now —
Let’s go, friends, let’s go!
For everything we lived in past
For everything that is to come!

From birches silent weightlessly
Falls down yellow leaf.
Old waltz “Autumn Dream”
Bellows an accordionist.
Sighing, basses do protest,
And though in a trance
Sitting and listening are warriors —
My friends.

A song of the Faraway Homeland

Music by M.Tariverdiev. Lyrics by R.Rozhdestvensky
Performed by Dmitry Hvorostovsky.
Watch on youtube.com

Begging you, just for a little while,
Pain of mine please abandon me.
Like a cloud, like a cloud caesious,
Go and soar there where is my home,
Away from here to where my home is.

Natal shore, come in sight afar,
Even just an edge, just a faint thin line,
Natal shore, shore endearing,
Oh, if only I could reach you,
My dear, if only I somewhen could.

Somewhere far away, very far away
The sun-showers are coming down,
Right by the riverside in the little garth
Had ripened cherries, bowed to the ground,

Somewhere far away, in my memories
It’s warm like in my childhood times,
Though memories are covered
With decuman layers of snow.

Thunderstorm, please, make me imbued,
Till I’m drunk, not until I die,
Yet again, like for a final time,
I’m staring somewhere into heavens,
As if I would grope for an answer…

Begging you, just for a little while,
Pain of mine please abandon me.
Like a cloud, like a cloud caesious,
Go and soar there where is my home,
Away from here to where my home is.

No Headstones (Mass Graves)

Music and lirycs by V.Vysotsky
Performed by the author.
Watch on youtube.com

Crosses were not erected on nameless mass graves,
And widows don’t cry here in pain,
Someone brings a bouquet of flowers each day,
And light up an Eternal flame.

Earth here before was heaving with pain and fear,
But now, granite covers someone’s son.
There is not one personal destiny here —
All destinies are merged into one.

In the Eternal flame one can see a burning tank,
And the old Russian huts, that smolder,
Burning Reichstag and burning Smolensk,
And the burning heart of a soldier.

On nameless mass graves there are no tearful widows —
Stronger kind of people come mainly here.
Crosses were not erected on nameless mass graves,
But does it makes it easier to bear?..

A song about a soldier

Music by V.Solovyov-Sedoy. Lyrics by M.Matusovsky
Performed by Edward Khil.
Watch on youtube.com

A soldier was going
Across a field, along a steep riverside,
By peasant’s houses;
Dressed in a gray greatcoat of private,
The soldier went, surmounting all obstacles;
The soldier went, losing his friends.
And it was often
When he had gone without a halt;
But the soldier was moving forward.

He was going in stormy nights,
He was going in the rain and hail.
Together with his combat friends
He was singing a song

The soldier was singing, swallowing tears;
He was singing about Russian birches,
About his beloved girl’s hazel eyes,
About the paternal home.
The soldier singed on the way.

It looked like his sub-machine gun
Adhered to his shoulder.
The soldier fought and hit,
Damned enemies everywhere.
The soldier fought and hit them nearby Smolensk,
The soldier fought and hit them nearby the settlement N.
The soldier fought and hit enemies,
Without counting the amount of [his] bullets,
The soldier fought and hit enemies without rest.

A soldier was going
Across a field, along a steep riverside,
By peasant’s houses;
Dressed in a gray greatcoat of private,
The soldier was going because he was a servant of Motherland.
The soldier was going for the sake of life.
He went, saving the World,
Protecting the peace.
The soldier was going forward!

He was going, saving the World,
Protecting the peace.
The soldier was going forward!

Katyusha

Music by M. Blanter. Lyrics by M. Isakovsky
Performed by Dmitry Hvorostovsky.
Watch on youtube.com

Apple-trees and pear-trees blossomed,
Mists floated over the river.
Katyusha went ashore,
On a high and steep bank.

She went out, started the song
About the steppe, blue eagle,
About the one she loved
About the one whose letters she kept.

Oh you song, a girl’s song,
Fly after the bright sun,
Say hello from Katyusha
To the fighter on the far border.

Let him remember a simple girl
Let him hear her sing.
May he protect the native land,
And Katyusha will save love.

Someone strolling down the hillside

Arrangement by B.Terentyev. Lyrics by V. Levashov
Performed by Valentina Tolkunova.
Watch on youtube.com

Someone came down from the hill.
Perhaps my dear is coming.
He wears a protective tunic,
It will drive me mad.

He wears the gold epaulettes,
And a bright medal on his chest,
Why, why I met,
Him on my life path!

Why, when he is passing by,
With a smile, waving his hand to me,
Why has he come to our farm,
What alarmed me peace!

When I see him – my heart right away
Worried in my chest,
Why, why I met,
Him on my life path!

Accidental Waltz

Music by M.Fradkin. Lyrics by E.Dolmatovsky
Performed by Dmitry Hvorostovsky.
Watch on youtube.com

The night is short
The clouds are sleeping
And lies in my palm
Your unfamiliar hand.

After worries
The town is sleeping.
I heard a waltz tune
And looked here for an hour.

Chorus:
Though I don’t know you at all
And far from here is my house
I’m like again
Near my home…
In this empty room
We are dancing together
So say a word
I don’t know what.

We will circle
Let’s be friends.
I completely forgot how to dance
And I beg you to excuse me.

Morning is calling
Back on the hike…
Leaving your little town
I will pass by your gate.

One summer morning at dawn
I look into the neighboring garden,
There is a dark-skinned Moldavian girl
Picking grapes.
I’m blushing, I’m turning pale
I suddenly want to say:
“Let’s meet the dawns of summer
by the river!”

Green curly maple, carved leaf,
I am in love and confused before you.
Green maple, curly maple
Yes, curly and carved.

A dark-skinned Moldavian
Answered the guy in the mood:
“We are putting together a Partisan Moldavian squad.
Partisans are leaving their home early today.
The road to the partisans in the dense forest is awaiting you”

Green curly maple, carved leaf,
Here, at the maple, we will part with you.
Green maple, curly maple
Yes, curly and carved.

And the dark-skinned Moldavian
Went on the path to the forest.
I saw as insult that she did not invite me to go with her.
I often thought at night
About the Moldavian dark-skinned girl.
I met my dark-skinned girl
in the squad again!

Green curly maple, carved leaf,
Hello, my good boy, my dear!
Green maple, curly maple
Yes, curly and carved.
